White Ink

TEST YOUR SKILLS!!

I hope to have the usual kind of post up soon, but to avoid no blog activity for June, I’ve created, for your amusement, a pair of Crypto-Quips (there’s a more formal name for them, I’m sure, but that’s what they were called back when I enjoyed solving them in the newspaper). Use your powers of letter substitution and submit your answers in the comments. Beware: Hints and allusions abound. If you get them right, I’ll mail you the complete works of a great punk band in a vastly outdated format. (Just kidding. That’s another hint.)

1. 40 Million Daggers

DW PYR OMR LN QWGDUDPRE EOPO,

O NGLAAI EDZX KLQGE TR KLQWPRE

OULWM O PRKY’Z OVKOWO.

Hint: L=O

2. The Great 26

BAXVG KLVAP QJABLK FAQYUBPEILO,

KLVPV’Q GU QZYL KLAGB

EQ WAGUP WAGUP KLPVEK.

Hint: G=N

Two of my readers submitted the correct answers elsewhere on the Internet. For the record:

1. In the age of unlimited data, a floppy disk could be counted among a tech's arcana.

(The clue was a play on Texarkana, a town that occupies Two States. I was going to replace it with a marginally more straightforward song-oriented clue--"20,000 miles to an oasis"?--but the quip was solved before that proved necessary.)

2. Given their slight discography, there's no such thing as minor Minor Threat.
